Text Expansion #4: I Met a Celebrity

Journal Entry: Wed Mar 16, 2016, 4:03 PM

Before we start, I’d like to quickly preface and let you know that I’ve broken this unique little text expansion up into parts for simplicity’s sake, and to help explain all of the different parts of this enormous clusterfuck as well as how it all came to be. So without further ado, I always wondered when I’d meet my first celebrity. And then I did. Here is that story.

They say you should never meet your idols, because they can never live up to be what you've built them up to be in your imagination. And earlier this year, I actually had the chance to meet my brother's idol and in turn one of my favorite icons from my childhood. Ever since then, the bizarre experience we had and the things I feel I've learned from it have weighed on my mind quite a bit, and I have been meaning to put thoughts from it on paper and really analyze what I observed and lived through that fateful night. So follow me, if you will, into the far off time of July 2015, as I tell you a tale of excitement, anticipation, pay off, and ultimately, growth as a person. The night we met Weird Al Yankovic.

Okay, so here's a bit of what you need to know going into this account. Every year, my awesome and adoring aunt does her best to get my brother and I concert experiences for our birthdays. She knows we both love music and she knows the groups we like, so she keeps an eye out for tickets when one of our groups is playing locally. The last several years, she has consistently gotten us tickets to see Weird Al Yankovic in concert, and each year, she's managed to get us seats that are closer and closer to the stage. He plays at a familiar venue and usually comes around about the same time of year every time he tours, so my aunt goes on the lookout and grabs the best tickets she can get. And this past summer, she hit the motherload. We had been to his concerts, sure. And we had even made it to the front row a few times. But this was going to go even one step above. This year, she had nabbed us VIP tickets that would not only let us into a pre-concert event party and get us in the middle of the front row of the concert, but we were one of the lucky few in the audience that night that would have an opportunity to meet Weird Al Yankovic live and in person. My brother and I were ecstatic. We could hardly believe it to be true. This was my brother's musical idol, we had essentially grown up with his music. Now we would meet him.

Neither of us had really ever met a celebrity before. The closest I had ever come was when my cousin approached someone who, to me, was a total stranger in the LAX airport. Turns out she was some lady on Game of Thrones I guess. I don't watch the show so I had no clue. But my cousin seemed pretty stoked. So as the big day approached, my brother and I started casually speaking about what we would say to him when we met him. He's one of those celebrities who has a fanbase that's largely made up of socially awkward types who have the tendency to embarrass themselves easily or say too much entirely, and we had a need to make our meeting with him as casual and non-awkward as possible. I have always been hyper-aware of the fact that celebrities are, at the end of the day, people. We are all smelly, weird primate creatures with our quirks and our eccentricities, our various mental disorders and strange habits. We're disgusting. We're unsightly. We're human. No matter how talented someone is at anything, they still shit regularly and once in awhile put clothes on. I have always felt like our society views celebrities as Greek heroes. We love to hear of their victories, and yet we love so much more to hear about their shortcomings and their downfalls. Perhaps it's because we like to be reminded that they are just like us. Or perhaps it is in a desperate attempt to shame someone other than us, someone who we may view to be deserving of such shame. I'm getting off topic - the point being, I promised myself if I ever met a celebrity, I would talk to them and engage them as one would engage another human. Politely, casually, and courteously. It's how you should treat everyone, celebrity or not. So I'm not sure how I imagined our conversation with Mr. Yankovic to go, but I suppose I figured it'd be brief but very down to earth. We would thank him for the years of entertainment, music and inspiration. And he would smile and thank us for listening.

Suddenly, it seemed, there we were. Front row at the concert. As the encore ended and the lights came up, a concert manager came out on stage and ordered everyone who hadn't paid for the meet and greet to exit the theater immediately. This was when I got my first weird feeling. It wasn't nervousness, and it wasn't fear. It was a feeling of being a pawn in some way. We were told to sit in our seats and wait until the manager gave us our next bit of info. The whole time we waited, the manager kept pumping us up by reminding us excitedly that we were going to meet THE Weird Al. The more he tried to get us hyped, the stranger I felt. I didn't want to meet THE Weird Al, I wanted to meet Alfred Yankovic, the humorist and musician I'd come to know and love. It wasn't about just meeting someone famous, it was about meeting someone my brother and I had looked up to. Surely we weren't in a group of celebrity worshippers...right?

Well, no. Partly we were, but we were also among a bunch of people old enough to be our parents that were completely smashed off of their asses and cursing loudly to one another as the evening wore on, and also a few of those awkward types we discussed before. The man beside me kept very vociferously saying the word 'cunt' in reference to Hilary Clinton, because I guess he and his drunk ass friend were having a political debate? Seems hardly the place for politics, but what do I know. Oh, and when they weren't being ragingly sexist and small-minded, they were bellowing at the manager where the "free beer" was and why there wasn't any while we were waiting. I began to quickly pity poor Mr. Yankovic, who would soon be forced to meet and share company these idiots firsthand. Rapidly, we were realizing that most of these people weren't here to tell him how much of an inspiration he was to them, or even to just thank him for his music. They were here so that when they went home to Backwoodsville, New York, they could tell their stupid idiot friends that they met a celebrity even though they don't remember any of it because they were blackout drunk. And he had to do this after every freakin' concert on this tour. Good god. This had to be the worst part of his day, and now WE were going to be a part of it.

As we were finally all told to stand and exit through a special backstage door, we then found ourselves lined up in the backstage hallway. The hallway was very narrow, with hardly enough width space to fit two people shoulder to shoulder. I was uncomfortably close to the drunk Clinton-haters, and my brother was ahead of me and next to a weirdo himself. The line seemed to be moving quickly, though, almost systematically. This worried me a bit, and I got that feeling again. We rounded yet another corner in the hallway, and I asked my brother if he could see Al from where we were (as he was much taller than me and could see over all of the people ahead of us). His face went blank, and his skin turned white. "Yeah," he replied, mouth dry, "He's right there..."

The Meet

At this, I peeked around the corner. And sure enough, he was. Weird Al himself, sitting humbly at a desk in what I could only assume were his post-concert lounge clothes. And that was when it hit me. He WAS just a human being. All of my nervousness left me. He was there before me - no longer an image on TV or my computer screen, nor just a voice in a speaker. He was a regular human being. It was real then. This wasn't a music god: this was a dad, a husband, and a son. This was an equal, an individual who loves and forgets and regrets and wonders...just like the rest of us. I became very relaxed by all of this. I can't say the same for my brother, who had gone from gravely silent to gravely silent with purpose. I asked if he was nervous. He could barely answer me. For him, this truly was huge. This was his all-time idol. This was a person that my brother deeply respected. And now, hit with this dose of reality, the surrealistic situation made him stiffen up. And we were next. My brother stepped forward first. Al shook his hand, and asked to verify his name for the autograph he was making out on a poster for him. My brother stood in stony silence. I was determined as I waited to approach him next that I would say something to him, words of appreciation. In reality, I wanted to warn him about the stupid drunk people behind me, but I knew that what I had to give him was a thank you. It'd be a thank you he had heard millions of times before, but that was the impression I wanted to leave on him. I was realizing too that there was a reason the line was moving so fast - there was tons of security, and you were allotted just enough time to get your signature post, shake his hand, and get out. It was like they didn't expect anyone to have anything to say to him at all. He was just a monkey signing posters and giving out handshakes. God knows we couldn't do this in total silence, but if I was going to speak, my words would have to be brief.

I was given the okay to approach his desk, and he smiled up at me and held out his hand. I took it, and smiled back, greeting him simply as, "Mr. Yankovic". He verified my name and began quickly autographing my poster. I was organizing my thoughts, and I started to speak to him. He hadn't heard me and asked me to repeat myself. I told him that he probably heard this all the time, but that we really appreciated his work and had grown up with it. He sweetly thanked me for my comments. We posed for a picture with him, and then, like that, we were hustled out of the way for the next in line.

The Aftermath

It seemed like it had lasted a half a second. We were suddenly being pushed to the exit, confused and slightly mystified. What had happened? Was that a meet and greet? They should really rename it to "drive-by autograph" or something akin to what it really was. Now I knew what I had expected it to be. I expected a chance to talk to a person I looked up to on a human level. Instead, it was more reminiscent of a sideshow attraction. He was dragged back out after a long busy night of performing to sit in front of a bunch of people who literally paid money to shake his hand and get his autograph. The public didn't want an intelligent conversation with someone they respected, they wanted to touch and maybe talk at a celebrity so they could say they did. Now I really felt bad for Al. I wondered if this had been his idea or not. He probably didn't even want an intelligent conversation, he probably just wanted to be left alone after a night of hard work. Certainly he couldn't have wanted a political discussion with a group of intoxicated rednecks.

The way I talk, I act like I didn't appreciate what we got. I definitely did, and we thanked our aunt for scoring us the experience, which we found out had cost an ungodly amount of money. What right did I have to look a gift horse in the mouth? I guess I just couldn't shake this feeling that we had all been exploited. Al for his celebrity status, and us for our willingness and eagerness to meet one. After all the build up the manager had given the meet and greet, we were received a very calm, very uncomfortable performer shyly giving autographs to strangers and looking exhausted at the same time. He had to be numb, it was the only way to pass by the hundreds of faces he saw a night. My brother and I were just two more faces, two more people he had to endure a few seconds with, acting like he gave a crap about anything other than just heading to bed and getting some damn peace and quiet that was probably so rare these days. Who could blame him? He is, of course, only human. All I could hope was that he had, in that moment, sensed the sincerity that I had given him in my brief comment to him. I didn't expect him to remember what I said or who we were. I just hoped in my heart that in those fleeting seconds and with those few words I was permitted to say, he understood that we meant what was said, and that we appreciated everything he did for us, right down to being willing to put aside bedtime just to give us a few seconds to tell him how we felt.

At some point in time, just about everyone imagines what it would be like to be famous. I just don't think we imagine it properly, at least at first. With fame comes adoring fans and passionate haters. With wealth comes a confusing muddled web of people who may only like you for the cash you dispense. It is a constant sea of attention and media coverage. It sometimes means struggling for a single moment of peace. The idea seems alluring at first, but plenty of celebrities will tell you that it is usually a series of challenges that are not for the faint of heart. And we wonder why so many of them go insane.

I guess the point of all this was to analyze fame. Celebrities are essentially their own brand, be they actors, musicians, or what have you. They make money by selling themselves, basically. And that's what made the meet and greet uncomfortable - I wanted time to be with Al Yankovic the musician, and instead, it felt more like my aunt had paid money for my brother and I to exist briefly in the same general space as Weird Al the celebrity. I like to look back and blame the manager for the corporate feeling the whole experience had. But at the end of the day, I wasn't sure. I certainly didn't blame Al, and I still look back and pity his position. Mr. Yankovic, if you're somehow reading this, meeting you was a pleasure. You have always been a comedic inspiration to both my brother and I, and I hope you know that there are people who truly appreciate who you are, what you do and the work that you've done. You've touched millions, and please know we support you as a person, not just as a famous person.

Also I'm really sorry about those wasted assholes that were right behind us in line.

Mortimer "Morty" McCullery {scribbilus insanicus}: An awkward and immature creature believed to be the product of a social disruption implosion in 1992. It has an interest in dressing strangely, playing acoustic guitar, and using various instruments to create bizarre markings on paper it calls 'pics'. It preys upon Instant Ramen, pizza, chicken, sandwiches, and excessive amounts of junk food, especially candy. It tends to drink massive quantities of Mountain Dew, milkshakes of all flavors, and liquefied rainbow sherbert. Nothing much seems to irritate this creature beyond rationality, although it can get slightly stressed if you take it's pencil. It also has a strange fascination with brains and may actually be a zombie. This has yet to be verified as no one will get close enough to investigate often for fear that insanity and weirdness is catching.

Art Trades & Commissions

:star: Art trades and commissions are OPEN :star:

Personal Rules for Art Trades:

:bulletblack: I don't drawr extreme nudity.
:bulletgreen: I do individual illustrations of one or more characters and one-panel full page comics ONLY, no comic strips because they tend to take a REALLY long time to do.
:bulletblack: If you want yourself to be in it, please give me a description in the note you send.

***(Commissions can be close to anything and may defy some of these rules depending on what is negotiated via note.)***

I used to do requests for free: no art, money or points in return. But it's gotten to the point where I can't justify doing spur of the moment requests with no form of payment for just acquaintances. Back in the day, my art required little time or planning because I was at such an amateur level in terms of skill. Obviously I've grown up a bit and now, even the shorter smaller art pieces take me a solid four hours at the least. Nowadays I still do gifts spontaneously for friends, but art trades are it now. So if you want me to make something for you, I expect a piece of art that is equal to what I am drawring you (colored, same amount of figures, etc.) in return, or some type of monetary compensation. No biggie. But once again, please note me for information and to submit or offer an art trade or commission.

Thanks! :meow:

I know what your Halloween pic should be for this year. Choose a group and then do this with them.…

I think it could be amusing to see how they react to a haunted house. though if you do jack and sally the workers may be the ones that need to run......... Wait do a thing like this but each photo can be a group from each group!!!!!!!!!! That could be fun.

At first I was going to be all like I miss you. then I realized that this is totally a Tori comment space because There is hardly anyone else who posts here.

Work is going great .I love it and they haven't fired me yet from all of the stupid things ive done, (which has been a lot and I even know that it was done wrong but it just happens....) I love all three cats. They are nicknamed Cutie pie (cant remember the name but its a lot cuter than that indigo maybe, Fluffy (no idea), and tigger ha I got that one correct. :D Yesterday all three came and said hello to me. One even wanted to help and jumped in the box I was packing. :D :D :3

I miss you so freaking much and am counting down the days till I see you in like 14 days 9 hours 16 minutes and 26 seconds. We totally have to play and I have so much to tell you and show you. And you have to design a tattoo for me. :D Just kidding but I need your advise between ideas. Cat with a sythe or Cat with a star :D Just kidding again I already desided that too. I think
